Personal Element: WATER

Elemental Life Role: EARTH

Type: WATER OF EARTH: The Sage

Water’s positive qualities: Sensitive, fluid, mysterious, dramatic, sensual, generous, empathic, compassionate
Water’s negative qualities: Inconsistent, over-sensitive, tearful, a “wet rag,” moody, tendency toward addictive behaviors
Experiences: Dreams, visions, secrecy, emotion, falling in love, child care
Roles, Jobs: Therapists and counselors, clergy, midwives, doulas, morticians, theater, parents and caretakers, artists

The Water person feels first and foremost.  “Thinking never solved anything—only our hearts should be our guides!”  Water people have a great facility with feeling; they are compassionate, caring, and great listeners.  Water people can be wonderful therapists.  They “go with the flow,” but don’t flit about like Air people.  Their movements have a definite path, albeit an often unexpected one.

Water people’s open hearts makes them generous, and their empathy can make them quite social, although not all Water people are “bubbly.”  They are often very dreamy, and can be mystical.  Water people are strikingly magical—they meditate, light incense, take steamy baths, wear charms, and so on (not that others don’t do these things).  Water people are often artistic as well, and are especially found among painters and musicians.

Continued personality summary, life role analysis, and overall personality type:

Water people often move with a sensual grace that reminds one of their element, and often have wide, open eyes, the kind that look deep and liquid.  Very Watery people often dress in flowing clothes or have flowing accessories.  Some Water people are dark, brooding, and perhaps even silent, an inward rather than outward Water manifestation.

Romance comes naturally to Water people; they give and receive love easily.  Some share themselves effusively, and some are very secretive, withholding information while being open with emotion.  Perhaps surprisingly, not all romantic Water types are particularly sexual; many find the physicality of sex to be a distraction.

All that feeling can lead to its share of problems.  Dark, negative feelings can make some Water people moody and sad.  More likely, the Water person will simply be prone to tears, often needing to “get serious” at moments when others would prefer to be lighthearted.  They can be as inconsistent as the tides, changing their minds the way Earth people change their socks.  Their wonderful sensitivity can go overboard, making them perceive every offhand remark as a major emotional statement.

Water people can choose to balance themselves.  Water needs to be offset by rationality, decisiveness, and groundedness.  With some balance, Water people can follow their flowing nature, and be happier for it.

Elemental Life Role: EARTH

Both Water life roles and Earth life roles are “grown-ups,” but the Earth type is “in charge.”  The Earth is the life role that is established, secure, solid, and authoritative.  Some people never get there, but many do.  They may not be captains of industry, but they are in charge of their own lives, unlikely to change, not *desirous* of change, and at peace with the way their lives have turned out.  It is unlikely for you to be in the Earth life role under the age of forty, but it happens.

If Earth role people have children, either they are not the primary caretaker, or their children are old enough that nurturing is not their main concern.  An Earth role person is usually married, in a long-term relationship, or just not interested in being in a relationship.  Earth life role people are probably satisfied with their career, but if not, they’ve settled—they’re not looking to move or change it much, they’re not on the fast track.  Earth life role people probably give valuable advice.

Even Earth life role folks don’t have everything they want.  When Earth life role people lack something, they tend to seek it methodically, as if with a shopping list.  The focus is not on the seeking, but on the having.

Earth life role people are often the bosses, the judges, the loan officers; the person other people have to get through or around in order to get what they want.  They are also the mentors, the guides, the sages.  All of these roles are Earth roles, bespeaking a presence that is real, meaningful, and functional in a day-to-day, earthy way.

Synthesis: WATER OF EARTH: The Sage

Water of Earth falls into two distinct personality types.  In this case, one is decidedly good, and one is if not evil, then at least really creepy.

Most people who take on the Water of Earth persona embody the Sage, the wise adviser, the person of great insight.  Their Earth role is like an island on their Watery nature, a stability that gives perspective and balance over the sometimes bumpy waves of Water’s ocean.  The Sage has a stable, even reserved exterior.  Their faces and manner are warm, and their smiles are kind and sincere, but they keep their own counsel—their role is to listen, not to reveal.  In the process of reaching the Earth stage, they have mastered their inner waters, but not forgotten them.  Their power is in the realms of feeling, mystery, and dreams.  They are sages, therapists, guides, or religious leaders.  They have lived their lives fully.  Their distance is not coldness, but the nonjudgmental mirror that the wise present to those who need guidance, so that they see themselves and not their guide.

But Water of Earth doesn’t always find firm balance above the water—sometimes they dive in.  One hesitates to say that this dark figure is truly the Earth life role, because they are hardly mature or a leader.  Instead, this is a person of an Earth age who has thrown away the Earth influence.  Diving deeply into the waters of their own fantasies, they are isolated and obsessed.

Thankfully, few Water people become so dark and unpleasant, and the majority of Water of Earth people have a great deal of goodness and warmth to share with the world.
